Trikatu (Indian Long Pepper, Black Pepper and Ginger/Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale) is a polyherbal compound that provides a natural and safe support system for gaseous distension associated with impaired gastric function.

Scientists at the Department of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii call the Ginger in Trikatu a herb that supports normal digestion and circulation, integrating East with West and old with new, prompting its ‘universal remedy’ reputation (Hawaii Medical Journal. December 2007, 66(12):326-7).

Trikatu also supports the normal assimilation of other nutrients. Researchers at the Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu, India, found that the combination of peppers in Trikatu possess ‘diverse biological activities’ that support the normal bioavailability of other nutrients (Journal of Ethnopharmacology. September 1992, 37(2):85-91).

Active constituents:

The main compound found in Black Pepper, one of the herbal ingredients in Trikatu, is the chemical substance called piperine. This compound influences metabolic activity in the human body. Studies have demonstrated that piperine is thermogenic, increases the bioavailability of nutrients and medications administered along with it, enhances metabolism and reduces mucus. Gingerol and shogaol, the active constituents in Ginger, suppress gastric contractions. Both the fresh and dried rhizomes of Ginger suppress gastric secretions and reduce vomiting.

Functions:

Gastrointestinal health: Trikatu contains three herbs that are beneficial for digestive ailments. The piperine in Long Pepper and Black Pepper helps digest fatty foods, and break down proteins. Black Pepper also reduces abdominal spasms and increases the absorption of nutrients. Ginger reduces the symptoms of functional dyspepsia such as abdominal pain and discomfort.
